The shrew-man
When the children who were born within a family were one after another all girls, when finally the first boy was delivered, he ought to be baptized by a “shrew-man”, so that his longevity would be ensured. The “shrew-man” was a person whose father had died during the period when his mother was pregnant with him. It was thought that he was a “shrew”, that is to say mean, since he had “killed” his father before he was even born.
